Ballerina Jewelry Boxes
What girl doesn't love ballerina jewelry boxes?
One of my most treasured objects when I was a little girl
was my ballerina jewelry box. It was a little pink box that had
drawings of beautiful ballerinas on it, and when you lifted the
latch and opened the lid, a little dancing ballerina twirled
around and around while the theme from the movie Ice Castles
(Through the Eyes of Love!) twinkled.
I would stare at that little dancer with her hair a painted
bun, and her tutu a little piece of crisp crinoline. Her bodice
was also painted on and it too was pink (as were her ballet
slippers).
I loved the box as much as I did all the little trinkets
that I kept inside of it. I think ballerina jewelry boxes are
most little girl's first prize possession.
The inside of the box was covered
in what else, pink satin and I thought it was just the most
luxurious material I had ever touched. And speaking of
touching, if my little brother so much as breathed on it, I
would give him a good pinch!
Ah, big sisters, aren't we great?
Anyway, and on the inside of the hinged lid was glued a mirror.
I thought that made perfect sense since all ballerinas have to
practice in front of a large mirror.
It was this box that made me want
to take ballet lessons. I wanted to be just as beautiful and
graceful as the ballerina in my jewelry box. I named her Madge,
and I wanted her to be my very best friend.
It's funny, that I can't really
recall all the stuff that I kept inside the box, but I can
remember every little detail of the box itself. That's why
ballerina jewelry boxes are so great, they're as treasured as
its contents. I kept that jewelry box until I left home for
college.
After that, I have no idea what
became of it and Madge. I gather my mother probably threw it
out when she turned my old bedroom into her sewing room. But I
still think about my ballerina jewelry box on occasion. For no
reason at all it will just pop into my head.
Madge spinning around to Through
the Eyes of Love. She never did seem to get tired. I mean I
just kept winding her up.
One thing is absolutely for
certain though. When I have a daughter, she's going to have one
of the most beautiful ballerina jewelry boxes in the world.
It's a small price to pay for something that puts a smile on
your face for the rest of your life. At least I hope she will
love hers as much as I loved mine.
